LONELY AT THE TOP sound effects #1

01 feb 2008 - 09 mar 2008

Seamus Harahan

In 2008 there will be the start of a new series on the fifth and sixth floors of LONELY AT THE TOP. The presentations are conceived as a group exhibition which unfolds and spreads out in time, in six chapters. The common thread throughout these chapters is ‘sound’; as a mediator, as a tool for communication, as a political platform, as a mapping of social space and as a relational force.

Seamus Harahan, Valley of Jehosephat/Version - In your Mind, 2007
In his work Holylands, Irish artist Seamus Harahan, juxtaposes a soundtrack of folk and popular music, with images filmed in an area of Belfast called Holylands where the artist lived. Footage of youths ripping open a water pipe in a minor act of delinquency are coupled with an Irish Ballad - producing an atmosphere of melancholia that obliquely references the generations of young man caught up in the troubles as well as the disenfranchised condition of a persistent economic underclass in the city.
