Art & Iconography

This guided tour is all about the imagery. Youngsters actively engage with questions like: What is there to be seen and what does it mean? What does the artist want to tell us and what means does he or she use? Which codes, symbols and conventions does the artist use?

No artist starts from scratch. Some contemporary artists make use of references to art history and traditional imagery. Other artists use elements, codes and symbols from the world around us.

Using assignments, we freshen up the knowledge of mythology, animal symbolism, colour symbolism, fairy tales and legends – and apply them to different contemporary artworks. In so doing, contemporary visual language has no more secrets for us.

For school groups applying for a guided tour, M HKA is open from Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 on.
