On Saturday, February 10th, at 19:00 hrs, internationally renowned artist Jim Shaw will be at The Cinema for a conversation with curator Anne-Claire Schmitz. They will discuss his work and his new solo exhibition, The Ties That Bind, on view at the M HKA. They will delve into his idiosyncratic imagery, which is peppered with references from American popular culture, and explore Shaw’s recent, heightened focus on the friction between conservative and progressive mindsets.
Jim Shaw created a new audiovisual work for the M HKA titled The Electronic Monster and Thirteen Ghosts. Since Shaw found inspiration for this work, among other things, in his first experience with monster movies as a child, we will be screening William Castle’s 1960 cult horror film ’13 GHOSTS’ afterward. When Dr Zorba dies, he leaves his house to his poor nephew, who moves in with his daughter. The house comes with two unexpected features: it is inhabited by thirteen ghosts that can only be seen with special glasses, and somewhere inside, a fortune is hidden.
Both the artist talk, conducted in English, and the film are included in the admission price. For an optimal ghost experience, each spectator will be provided with a free Ghost Viewer. The film ticket also gives free admission to the exhibition Jim Shaw – The Ties That Bind (9 Feb – 19 May 2024) at the M HKA.
This event is organised within the framework of FRONT ROW, a new series of artist talks presented by M HKA in collaboration with NICC.
Made possible by National Lottery players, thanks to whom the National Lottery supports the exhibition Jim Shaw – The Ties That Bind and the public program.
