FRONT ROW with Hamza Halloubi

This event is organised within the framework of FRONT ROW, a new monthly series of artist’s talks jointly organised by M HKA and NICC. Serving as an open format to artists – whether a talk, a presentation of an idea, a lecture performance – the programme offers the opportunity to reflect on art, culture and society by some of the most thought-provoking artists practising today. The talks are the ideal occasion to meet artists, and to consider their ideas and propositions.

Brussels-based artist Hamza Halloubi is a filmmaker who crafts reflections on different characters and historical figures. His films are a kind of experimental portraiture and are highly contemplative, combining facets of the personal within the broad historical narrative of such topics as anticolonialism, the migrations of people and objects, and international solidarities. Somewhere between fiction and documentary, they offer poetic meditations on these complex individuals.

For his participation in the FRONT ROW artist talks programme at M HKA, Halloubi will screen his film work Un après-midi à Larache (2015-2016) about writer and activist Jean Genet, before a conversation on his filmic practice. The artists will also discuss his current research towards a new film installation that focuses on anti-imperial revolutionary Mehdi Ben Barka, who was a key protagonist of The Organization of Solidarity with People of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAAL).

FRONT ROW is co-organised by M HKA and the artist-run platform NICC through a shared basis in supporting artists, nurturing international perspectives, and being generators of discussion. This talks programme in particular is organised through a desire to embody diversity in recognition of the complexity of artistic practice today.
