FOCUS: Utopia

10 Jan 2027, 14:00 - 16:00

How do we see the future?

With Maya Van Leemput, we explore different visions of the future. What do they tell us about our world and the utopias we live in today?

What is FOCUS?

One Sunday a month, we take a closer look at a theme in the work of Lee Bul. FOCUS takes place at Muhka during the exhibition Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now. Each guest brings a different perspective on her work through a performance, conversation or talk, drawing on their own practice. You then join a guide in the exhibition to look more closely at selected works.

About the theme

The English humanist Thomas More coined the word ‘utopia’ for his 1516 book, part of which he wrote in Antwerp. The word means both ‘a good place’ and ‘no place’. Lee Bul shows how utopian ideals repeatedly fail or turn into something else. Yet they continue to shape our dreams of the future.
