Collection works on view at the Nomadic Monument for Gaza
From 13 to 22 March, the Nomadic Monument for Gaza is presented as part of the exhibition we refuse_d. This installation — freely accessible at the former Raamtheater — is accompanied by a programme in which artists and collectives reflect on resistance, solidarity and moral responsibility in times of war and injustice. M HKA also presents five works from its collection (mainly video works) that engage with these themes.
Art installation with public programme
The artwork consists of towering pillars made of soft felt — a material that absorbs sound. The pillars are arranged in the shape of Gaza, allowing visitors to symbolically “enter Gaza”. Beneath this quiet space lies a floor carpet depicting a map of The Hague and its surroundings, exactly the same size as the Gaza Strip. At its centre stands the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice.
In collaboration with Cloud Force One, Toneelhuis, Uitgeverij Jurgen Maas, De Wolkenbreier and Tommy Simoens Gallery, we have developed a public programme around the monument. Through talks, exhibitions and performances, artists and collectives explore Palestinian culture and themes such as resilience, solidarity and resistance. The programme concludes with an art auction featuring works by artists from Antwerp and beyond.
