Muhka sets out its plans for the coming years

Muhka will remain open and independent, while spending the next two years strengthening its foundations. To support this work, we are submitting a transition plan for 2026–2028.

The plan builds on the direction set by our Governing Body: Collection as foundation. Network as strength. By the end of 2028, we want to be ready for the 2029–2033 policy period — as an organisation, as a museum and in the way we work with others.

“We first want to lay solid foundations, so that our collection and our collaborations can truly fulfil their potential in the years ahead. This plan sets out the first steps towards that.”

Dieter Vankeirsbilck, Acting General Director

Not a new policy plan

This is not a new policy plan. It is primarily a practical plan that sets out concrete steps and agreements. It explains how we will make considered use of the resources available for the transition between 2026 and 2028.

What are we working on?

We are focusing on what we need to make our ambitions a reality:

  • a stronger organisation
  • a coherent approach to the collection
  • better collaboration with artists, schools, educational institutions and other organisations
  • a shared digital working environment
  • clear agreements on how decisions are made
  • a clearly defined place within the arts landscape

What happens when?

Autumn 2026. We strengthen the foundations of the museum. We launch a new approach to communication and begin the process of developing our collection practice.

2027. We further develop how we make decisions, work together digitally and involve others more closely. Our approach to the collection also takes shape.

2028. We test the choices we have made, embed them in the organisation and put them into practice. We make the collection more accessible and write texts that everyone can understand. This prepares us for our 2029–2033 policy plan.

What does this mean for visitors?

In the short term, visitors will notice little change. The museum remains open, with the exhibitions and activities you are familiar with. Over time, the collection will take on a more central role in everything we do, and we will work more closely with others.

What happens next?

Over the coming weeks, we will present the plan to the Department of Culture, Youth and Media and the office of the Flemish Minister for Culture. The minister will validate the plan in mid-October. From 2027 onwards, we will actively develop the 2029–2033 policy plan, which we will submit on 15 January 2028.
