M HKA underscores the importance of the climate movement on Earth Day
22 April is Earth Day, a day on which attention is drawn worldwide to protecting the Earth. Together with the other institutions of L’Internationale, M HKA explicitly expresses its support for the global climate movement. We are organising a content-driven programme on Saturday 25 April.
Together for climate action
Climate policy is under pressure worldwide. Environmental measures are being rolled back, funding is disappearing, and climate activists are increasingly facing obstruction, criticism and even prosecution.
As a museum, we recognise that reality. At the same time, we continue to believe in the power of collaboration and imagination. Art and culture play an important role in how we think about the future of our planet.
Art, engagement and responsibility
Within L’Internationale – a European collaboration of museums, universities and arts organisations – the climate crisis has been a major theme for years. This is reflected in exhibitions, projects and collaborations with artists, scientists and activists. They are our partners, inspirers and allies.
M HKA therefore endorses the statement by L’Internationale in which we explicitly express our solidarity with the global climate movement. We oppose the growing resistance to climate science and action, and continue to advocate for a liveable future.
What are we doing in concrete terms?
Earth Day 2026 is centred on connection and action. Within the network of L’Internationale this takes place in three ways:
- Across all countries there are programmes and actions, from workshops to performances and publications. M HKA is doing this on 25 April.
- Local climate efforts are given a platform and strengthened.
- The institutions take responsibility, with sustainable choices and a clear focus on climate in their work.
M HKA actively contributes to this. We continue to invest in sustainable practices and collaborations, and place the climate challenge at the centre of our activities.
Programme on 25 April
The M HKA is organising an engaging lecture, a green walk-in workshop and a screen-printing workshop. Not on Earth Day itself (a weekday), but on Saturday afternoon 25 April, so that more visitors can take part in this free programme.
- At the heart of the programme is the lecture Canine Futures: Traces of Care, for Cities to Come, on how cities can live better with animals, with a focus on stray dogs.
- During a walk-in workshop with Volle Grond we make seed bombs. Discover how small interventions can make the city greener and support urban biodiversity.
- You can also take part in a screen-printing action inspired by the ecological practice of Nicolás García Uriburu. He draws attention to the relationship between geography, identity and the natural world.
