Volle Grond x M HKA

Urban farming at M HKA expands to a second rooftop

Zuiderdaken is growing. The urban agriculture cooperative Volle Grond has recently started gardening on the second rooftop terrace of M HKAFE. This expansion opens the door for more city farmers to join this inspiring collaborative project. Come and meet this lively community on 15, 21 or 22 March and find out how you can take part.

Zuiderdaken since 2025

In May 2025, the urban agriculture cooperative Volle Grond put down roots on the rooftop terrace of M HKA. Under the name Zuiderdaken, 40 members now garden there together in the middle of the city. This spring the project is expanding. On the neighbouring second rooftop, facing the Scheldt quays, a new greenhouse has been installed with extra growing space on straw bales. This will allow us to welcome more urban farmers.

This expansion comes at a time when M HKA is facing a number of challenges. It shows how the collaboration between the museum and the cooperative is built on a shared belief in the power of M HKA as a living, welcoming and social place, quite literally on top of the city.

Volle Grond

For several years, Volle Grond has been developing rooftop farms and participatory urban agriculture projects in Antwerp and beyond. From their rooftop farm at PAKT in the Groen Kwartier — a 1,800 m² shared kitchen garden with more than 100 members — the cooperative reconnects city residents with food, nature and one another.

Become a Zuiderdaken farmer

More growing space means new opportunities. Anyone with green fingers, or simply the curiosity to develop them, can join the project. As a Zuiderdaken farmer you will learn sustainable and innovative growing techniques, work alongside experienced urban farmers and help make Antwerp a greener and more vibrant city.

During three information sessions you can meet Volle Grond and discover how you can become part of Zuiderdaken.
